Suicide in South Korea: IA Paper
(College Assignment)

Project Overview

For one of my English courses in college I was given a two-part assignment, an AA paper and a IA paper. First, I was assigned to analyze a subject and its opposing views. I chose "What is the cause of the high suicide rates in South Korea?". I did extensive research, looking to what stood out amongst South Korean citizens and media as some most probable causes. I was able to find statistics, articles on the lifestyle of South Koreans from childhood to later adult life, and quotes from South Korean medical experts. During my research I could see there was no single cause of the country's high suicide rate. As I dived deeper into cause and effect, it became clear that there were a few main elements that played as culprits to an unhappy lifestyle for many South Korean citizens. This led to my IA paper, which focused on my argument on the cause for the suicide rate, to concede that it was for all of the reasons mentioned in my AA paper. A rigorous all-work lifestyle, the high beauty standards, the pressures of society and family, the competitive and cutthroat mentality (even among children) they're taught in order to obtain happiness and success in their life. It all weighs down on them. These were some of the main culprits to the high suicide rate in South Korea.
